BBC F1 Playlist: Australia 2012 Edition
Please give a warm welcome to great new feature on Rookie F1 from @jagolevert.
A new year, a new season, and a new regular feature!
That’s right, the BBCF1 Playlist is back with a 2012 addition, cataloguing the songs from the award winning F1 coverage into one accessible playlist for your pleasure!
We start in Australia, and the return of the spine tingling anthem that calls us to our TV screens, The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac, accompanied by new opening titles. Personally, I’m more of a fan of the old titles but the new ones aren’t too shabby. But I digress.
The BBC really laid on a treat for us with their first VT, a cover of Subterranean Homesick Blues, originally by Bob Dylan, summing up the previous year and speculating about the current season, with JB and DC predictably tit-arseing about at the end (Not that we mind at all, please, don’t stop!). The Beeb have not provided us with the covering artist as yet, so I think it’s safe to assume that they went all out and roped in Bob himself
Earthquake by Labrinth ft Tinie Tempah was the overall theme for the qualifying programme, introducing the Qualifying highlights and closing the programme, with Against All Odds and The Drive Rossbourgh by David Holmes taking us through the Jenson Button interview with Jake.
Now, who would have thought you could put Aquarium by Camille Saint-Saens and Back in Black by Joe Lynn and Phil Collen (AC/DC cover) together and make it work? Not many people, I can imagine, but the Beeb (probably on some sort of caffeine high to adjust to time difference/ward off jet lag) clearly went, “Ah, sod it, we’ll make it work!” And it does. At least I think so anyway.
Interesting opening to the race coverage! Introducing the race itself, we had the aptly named Off To The Races by Lana Del Rey and ending the programme was the also aptly named Outro by M83. Something tells me the Beeb had a caffeine crash and Googled “Races” and “Outro” to find relevant songs, but hey, it worked.
A solid start to the year, hopefully with the live races we’ll be treated to even more music to add to the playlist but we’ll take what we can get!
Until Malaysia, folks!

They always manage to get the music right. So I’m going to look forward to this post after each race.
Such a shame Sky can’t have The Chain too, while I like Just Drive it doesn’t get me hyped the same way The Chain does.
I don’t like what Sky has done to the song, it sounds all ~BLEH!~
For me, “Just Drive” will always be synonymous with the Beeb, and Abu Dhabi 2010, and Sebastian winning his first championship. Brings a tear to the eye!
Also: The Chain is PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE EARGASM.
I agree, the reason Formula 1 fans love Just Drive is because the Beeb used it to sum the season up in 2010. It’s not enough to get you all excited for a race though.
You hear The Chain and you know it’s Formula 1.
